The Complete Guide to Sports Hijabs: Coverage, Fabric & Fit

A good sports hijab lets athletes compete with full coverage and full freedom of movement. For UAE schools, universities and women’s clubs, it is often the piece that makes a team kit truly inclusive.

See our Muslim women’s sportswear line for hijab-friendly team kit. This guide is written for PE heads, coaches and club managers who are choosing a sports hijab UAE players will actually want to wear, and who need it to match the rest of the kit.

What this guide covers

Coverage styles

Coverage preferences differ between athletes and families, so the most useful thing a school or club can do is offer a small choice within the same colour and fabric. Four styles cover most needs.

One-piece pull-on

A shaped hood that pulls over the head and frames the face. It covers the hair, ears and neck, has no loose ends and is the most common choice for team sport.

Extended pull-on

The same shape with a longer front and back that tucks into the jersey collar or sits over the upper chest. It suits athletes who want more neck and chest coverage and helps the hijab stay in place when the head turns sharply.

Two-piece cap and scarf

A close-fitting under-cap holds the hair, with a separate lightweight tube or scarf over it. It allows more adjustment and suits lower-intensity activity, PE lessons and warm-ups.

Wrap styles

A stretch wrap gives the most familiar look and the most control over drape. For sport, the ends need to be secured within the garment rather than pinned. Pull-on and wrap styles both work; the right one depends on the sport.

A secure fit without pins

The priority is a secure fit that stays in place during sprinting, jumping and contact, without constant adjusting. Pins and hard clips are a risk to the wearer and to other players, and many competitions do not allow them. A sports hijab should hold through its construction instead.

  • Stretch and recovery: the fabric should grip gently and return to shape after it is pulled.
  • A soft band at the hairline: this stops the front edge creeping back during play.
  • Shaped seams: a contoured back seam follows the head so there is less spare fabric to shift.
  • Flat stitching: flat seams reduce rubbing at the jaw and behind the ears.
  • Tuck-in length: enough length at the neck to stay inside the collar when the athlete reaches or jumps.

Test the fit the way it will be used. Ask the athlete to sprint, jump, look sharply over each shoulder and bend forward. If she needs to adjust it afterwards, try another size or style. She should also be able to hear a coach or a whistle clearly.

Fabric, breathability and care

Lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric helps keep the head cooler during play in UAE conditions, which matters for comfort and focus. A hijab covers the head and neck for the whole session, so its fabric deserves as much attention as the jersey.

  • Knit, not woven: stretch knits move with the head and need no pinning.
  • Light but opaque: the fabric should give full coverage in a single layer, including when damp.
  • Ventilation: some designs add a finer mesh panel at the back of the neck or crown.
  • Colour: darker shades absorb more heat in direct sun, which is worth weighing for daytime outdoor sport.
  • Swim use: pool sessions need a dedicated swim fabric, not a standard sports knit.

Our guide to breathable sports fabrics for the UAE climate explains knit structures and moisture management in detail. Fabric guidance is advice, not a performance guarantee. Final specification will be confirmed during quotation.

Care

A sports hijab sits against skin and hair, so wash it after every session. Use a cool wash, avoid fabric softener, and dry it flat or on a line out of direct sun. Most athletes need at least two so that one is always clean. The fabric care guide has general laundering advice.

Matching the team kit

Sports hijabs can be matched to team colours and paired with full-coverage jerseys and bottoms so the whole squad looks unified. Agree one hijab colour for the team — usually the main jersey colour, black or white — and apply it to every player who wears one.

Most teams pair the sports hijab with a long-sleeve jersey, full-length bottoms and, where needed, a modest sports dress or burkini. Our women’s modest sportswear page shows how those pieces fit into a kit, and the sports team uniforms category lists kits by sport. For individual modest activewear, Nenoush is a Mustang group brand.

If you want a crest on the hijab, keep it small and place it at the side, away from the face and from any seam that sits against the skin.

Sizing for juniors and adults

A sports hijab that is too loose shifts; one that is too tight causes pressure at the forehead and jaw. Three measurements matter: around the head at the hairline, around the face opening, and the length from the crown to where the hijab should finish.

Juniors are best sized by trying on, since age bands are only a starting point and hair volume changes the fit. Allow for growth through the school year, but not so much that the face opening gapes. Adults should choose by measurement and by how much neck and chest coverage they prefer.

Athletes can try coverage and fit at our Jebel Ali showroom before ordering. Our size and fit guide and the article on how to measure for a sizing chart cover the rest of the kit.

Competition rules and buyer checklist

Many sports now set out what headwear may be worn in competition. Rules can cover colour, how the hijab relates to the jersey, fastenings and whether it may cover the neck. They differ between sports and change over time, so check your own league or federation’s current regulations before you order. We do not claim approval from any governing body for any garment.

Mustang recommendation: offer two styles in one team colour, a standard pull-on and an extended pull-on, and let each athlete choose. Size by trying on, supply at least two per player, and order the hijabs with the jerseys so the colours are matched from the start.

Buyer checklist

  • Sports and settings the hijab will be worn for, including swimming.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a sports hijab different from an everyday hijab?

It is made from a stretch performance knit, shaped to stay in place without pins, and designed to manage heat and sweat during exercise.

Can sports hijabs be made in our team colours?

Yes. They can be matched to team colours and supplied with long-sleeve jerseys and full-length bottoms so the squad looks consistent.

Are sports hijabs allowed in competitions?

Many sports permit them, often with conditions on colour and design. Check your own league or federation’s current regulations, as these vary and are updated.

How many sports hijabs does each player need?

We suggest at least two, so there is always a clean one. Players who train most days may want more.

How should juniors be sized?

By trying on wherever possible. Age bands are only a starting point, because head size and hair volume vary. Students can try sizes at our Jebel Ali showroom.

Can athletes try a sports hijab before the team orders?

Yes. Athletes can try coverage and fit at our Jebel Ali showroom, and a free sample is provided against a confirmed order (LPO).
