This glossary explains the terms buyers and procurement teams encounter when sourcing uniforms and workwear in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman, and across the wider GCC. It covers garment and accessory types, fabrics, manufacturing methods, branding techniques, certifications, sizing terminology and the procurement and regulatory terms specific to GCC B2B buying. Use it alongside our industries and product pages when preparing a quote request, or see the About Uniform Suppliers UAE page for more on how we work across the region.

A fabric combining polyester and cotton fibres, balancing cotton’s comfort with polyester’s durability and easy care, widely used in corporate and industrial uniforms.

100% Cotton

A natural fibre fabric valued for breathability and comfort, though it can shrink and wrinkle more than blended fabrics.

Twill Fabric

A woven fabric with a diagonal rib pattern, known for durability and drape, commonly used in trousers, jackets and workwear.

Ripstop Fabric

A fabric woven with reinforcing threads in a grid pattern to resist tearing and stop small rips from spreading, used in heavy-duty workwear and outdoor uniforms.

Moisture-Wicking Fabric

A fabric engineered to draw sweat away from the skin to the outer surface for faster evaporation, common in sports and active uniforms.

Breathable Fabric

A fabric constructed to allow air circulation and heat and moisture escape, an important consideration for outdoor and industrial uniforms worn in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman’s climate.

GSM (Grams per Square Metre)

A measurement of fabric weight and density. A higher GSM generally indicates a heavier, more durable fabric, and a lower GSM a lighter one.

Oxford Fabric

A basket-weave cotton or poly-cotton fabric with a soft texture and subtle sheen, commonly used for corporate shirts.

Non-Woven Fabric

A fabric made by bonding fibres rather than weaving or knitting them, typically used in disposable PPE such as coveralls and shoe covers.

Flame-Resistant (FR) Fabric

Fabric treated or engineered to resist ignition and self-extinguish, used in oil, gas, energy and industrial safety uniforms. Final specification and certification is confirmed during quotation. See oil, gas and energy workwear.

Production Methods and Manufacturing Techniques

CMT (Cut, Make, Trim)

A manufacturing arrangement where a factory cuts fabric, sews (makes) the garment and finishes (trims) it, typically using fabric and trims supplied or specified by the customer. See custom uniform manufacturing.

Pattern Making

The process of creating the templates, or patterns, used to cut fabric pieces for a garment, based on a design and size specification.

Garment Grading

Scaling a base pattern up or down to produce the full range of sizes shown on a size chart.

Marker Making

Arranging pattern pieces on a fabric layout to minimise material waste before cutting.

Fabric Cutting

The stage where fabric is cut into pattern pieces, either manually or using automated cutting equipment, ready for sewing.

Bulk Production

The main manufacturing run of an order, following sample approval, producing the full confirmed quantity.

Pre-Production (PP) Sample

A sample made using the actual approved fabric and construction, produced just before bulk production begins to confirm final accuracy. See uniform sampling.

Fit Sample

A sample garment produced specifically to check sizing and fit on a wearer or form before wider production.

Quality Control (QC)

Inspection processes applied during and after production to check that garments meet the agreed specification before dispatch.

AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit)

A statistical sampling standard used in quality-control inspections to define the maximum number of defective units considered acceptable in a batch.

Garment Dyeing

Dyeing a finished garment after it has been sewn, rather than dyeing the fabric or yarn beforehand.

Piece-Dyed / Yarn-Dyed

Piece-dyed fabric is woven or knitted first, then dyed as a whole piece. Yarn-dyed fabric uses yarn that is dyed before weaving or knitting, often used for checks and stripes.

Branding and Decoration Techniques

Embroidery

A branding technique where a logo or text is stitched directly into fabric using coloured thread, producing a raised, durable finish suited to corporate and workwear uniforms. See embroidery and garment branding.

Embroidery Digitizing

Converting a logo or artwork into a stitch file that an embroidery machine can read and sew accurately.

Screen Printing

A printing technique where ink is pushed through a mesh stencil onto fabric, well suited to bold, solid-colour designs on bulk orders. See garment printing.

Heat Transfer Printing

Applying a printed design to fabric using heat and pressure, often used for detailed, multi-colour or photographic designs.

Sublimation Printing

A technique where dye is heat-transferred into synthetic, typically polyester, fabric fibres, producing a permanent, all-over print without a raised texture.

Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printing

Printing artwork directly onto fabric using specialised inkjet technology, suited to detailed designs and smaller quantities.

Laser Engraving

Using a laser to etch a design or text into a badge, buckle or accessory surface, commonly used for metal name badges.

Woven Label

A label woven, rather than printed, with a logo or text, used for care labels, brand labels and size labels.

Printed Label

A fabric or satin label with a design applied by printing rather than weaving, generally more economical than woven labels.

Appliqué

A decoration technique where a separate piece of fabric is cut into a shape and stitched onto the garment to form a design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between workwear and a corporate uniform?

Workwear is a general term for occupational clothing built for durability and task performance, such as coveralls or safety vests. A corporate uniform is typically office or guest-facing attire designed primarily to present a consistent, branded company image.

What does MOQ mean when ordering uniforms in the UAE?

MOQ stands for minimum order quantity, the smallest amount a supplier can produce or supply for a given item or customisation. It varies by product and is confirmed when you request a quote.

What certifications should I look for in a uniform manufacturer?

Common reference points include OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for harmful-substance testing, ISO 9001 for quality management, and social-compliance programmes such as amfori BSCI, WRAP or SA8000. See the certifications and compliance terms above, and let us know your specific certification requirement so it can be factored into sourcing and confirmed at quotation.

Does Uniform Suppliers UAE supply uniforms across Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman?

Yes. Uniform Suppliers UAE is a UAE-based manufacturer and supplier that coordinates uniform supply and project delivery across the GCC, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait. Exact scope, documentation and delivery arrangements for each country are confirmed at quotation stage.

What is the difference between ready-stock and custom-manufactured uniforms?

Ready-stock uniforms are available from existing inventory for faster supply, while custom-manufactured uniforms are produced to a company’s specific fabric, colour, fit and branding requirements. Many uniform programmes combine both, using ready stock for urgent needs and custom manufacturing for long-term standardisation. See ready-stock uniforms and custom uniform manufacturing.
