Every uniform decision eventually comes down to one question: how does the logo get onto the garment? The answer changes the look of the shirt, the comfort of the wearer and how the whole set ages after six months of Gulf laundering.

Embroidery and printing are not competing products. They are different processes with different physics, and the right choice depends on the fabric, the artwork, the placement and the working environment far more than on preference.

This guide sets out how each method works, which fabrics suit it, how it survives commercial washing in UAE conditions, and how to prepare artwork so the result matches the approval on screen.

How a logo actually reaches the garment

There are only three mechanisms. The logo is stitched into the fabric, laid on top as a layer of ink or film, or dyed into the fibres themselves. Everything else is a variation on those three.

Stitching adds texture and mass, so it reads as permanent and formal but cannot reproduce photographic detail. Surface layers reproduce anything but sit on the cloth, so they can crack, peel or feel warm. Dyeing into the fibre leaves no hand-feel at all but only works on specific polyester fabrics.

Knowing which mechanism you are buying explains almost every trade-off below, including why a method that looks perfect on a woven shirt fails on a technical polo.

Embroidery in detail

Embroidery converts artwork into a stitch file, so the machine follows stitch paths rather than pixels. That digitising step is where quality is decided: the same logo digitised well and badly gives visibly different results on the same machine.

Thread does not fade the way surface ink does, which is why embroidery holds up through frequent commercial washing. The limitation is resolution. Text below roughly 4 mm cap height fills in, thin outlines disappear, and gradients become blocks of solid thread.

Stabiliser choice matters on knits. A polo needs enough backing to stop the stitching pulling the fabric into a pucker, and dense stitch counts on lightweight knit always distort more than the same design on a woven shirt. Full detail is on the embroidery service page.

Printing methods in detail

Screen printing is the most economical way to put one design on a large number of cotton garments, and a correctly cured print survives repeated washing. Its weakness is colour count: every additional colour is another screen and another pass.

Heat transfer and cut vinyl suit small quantities and personalisation, which is why staff names and numbers are applied this way. The trade-off is that vinyl is a solid film on the surface, so a large area does not breathe.

Digital transfer bridges the gap, handling photographic artwork and gradients without screens. Sublimation differs again: the dye becomes part of the fibre, so the print cannot crack, but it only works on white or light polyester. The garment printing service page covers the practical differences.

Which method for which garment

Use this as a starting decision guide, then confirm against the actual fabric.

  • Piqué cotton or poly-cotton polo: embroidery on the left chest, the default for office, retail and facilities teams. Fabric weight guidance is in the polo shirt guide.
  • Technical or performance polo: heat transfer or light embroidery with soft backing. Heavy stitching on stretch knit distorts the panel.
  • Woven formal shirt: small embroidery on the chest or cuff. Woven cloth holds a crisp stitched outline.
  • Cotton T-shirt for an event: screen printing for volume, digital transfer for short runs or full-colour artwork.
  • Industrial coverall or high-visibility garment: embroidery or heat transfer, applied clear of reflective tape. Never brand over a reflective band.
  • Chef jacket or apron: embroidery, which withstands frequent hot washing better than a surface print.
  • Cap: embroidery only, with the design simplified for the curved front panel.
  • Sports or team kit: sublimation if the garment is cut and sewn from white polyester, otherwise heat transfer for names and numbers.

Gulf laundering, sun and heat comfort

Two UAE realities decide how branding ages. The first is wash frequency. Hospitality, healthcare and food service uniforms are laundered daily, often commercially at high temperature with strong detergent. Over a year that is hundreds of cycles, and the gap between thread and surface ink becomes obvious.

The second is sun. Outdoor teams in facilities, logistics, construction and valet roles take sustained UV exposure. Printed inks and dyed fabrics both shift under it, so the same logo can end up a slightly different shade on an outdoor garment.

Heat comfort is the point most specifications miss. A large solid print across the back of a shirt is effectively a plastic panel: it does not breathe, and in a UAE summer the wearer feels it. If a back logo is required, keep it modest, use outlined or open artwork rather than a solid block, and consider embroidery or a lighter transfer instead. Artwork preparation checklist

Most branding disappointments start in the artwork file, not the machine. Work through this before approving production.

  • Supply vector files: AI, EPS, PDF or SVG. A JPG or PNG pulled from a website cannot be scaled or digitised cleanly.
  • Check minimum legible detail: for embroidery, text below about 4 mm cap height and lines thinner than roughly 1 mm will not hold. Simplify rather than shrink.
  • Match colours deliberately: thread and ink come from different colour systems. Give a reference for each brand colour and accept that the closest thread is an approximation.
  • Provide a one-colour fallback: a single-colour logo is needed for engraving, woven items and small embroidery. Prepare it once rather than improvising per order.
  • State dimensions in centimetres: “logo 8 cm wide” is a specification. “Medium sized” is not.
  • Measure the placement from a seam: for example, “centre of logo 9 cm down from the shoulder seam and 7 cm in from the placket”. Descriptions such as “left chest, normal position” produce inconsistent results across sizes.
  • Set placement per size: a fixed measurement that suits a medium will sit high on a 3XL. Agree how placement scales.
  • Approve a physical sample: a stitched or printed sample on the actual garment settles colour, density and hand-feel questions no screen can.
  • Archive the approved file: keep the stitch file, ink references and placement measurements with the order record so the next reorder repeats exactly.

Consistency across branches and reorders

Multi-branch organisations rarely fail on the first order. They fail on the third, when one branch orders separately, a different file is supplied, and the logo comes back 2 cm larger in a slightly different blue.

Three controls prevent this. Keep one master artwork set held centrally. Keep one written placement specification with measurements, not descriptions. Keep the approved sample as the reference for every subsequent batch.

Dye lots are the remaining variable. Garments made in different batches can differ subtly in shade, so an item added six months later may not sit perfectly beside the original. Frequently asked questions

Is embroidery always better than printing?

No. Embroidery is the more durable choice on polos, woven shirts, caps and jackets, and it reads as more formal. Printing is better for large designs, photographic artwork and lightweight jersey where stitching would distort the fabric. The right answer depends on fabric, artwork complexity and wash frequency.

Which method survives daily commercial laundering best?

Embroidery and sublimation. Embroidered thread does not crack or peel, and sublimation dye is bonded into the fibre so there is no surface layer to fail. Screen printing performs well when properly cured. Vinyl and film transfers are the most vulnerable, particularly at high wash temperatures combined with tumble drying.

Can a full-colour logo be embroidered?

It can be interpreted in thread, but not reproduced exactly. Embroidery renders colour as solid blocks, so gradients, shadows and photographic elements must be simplified. Most brands keep a simplified embroidery version alongside the full-colour original, which also solves legibility on caps and cuffs.

Why does the thread colour not exactly match our brand colour?

Thread is dyed polyester or rayon in a fixed range, while brand colours are usually specified in a print or screen system. The closest available thread is selected, and the perceived shade also shifts with stitch direction and light. Approving a stitched sample is the reliable way to confirm the match.

How should logo placement be written in a tender?

As measurements from a fixed point on the garment, such as a distance down from the shoulder seam and in from the placket, together with the logo width in centimetres. Also state how placement adjusts across the size range. Written descriptions alone produce inconsistent results between sizes and between production batches.
